  • Types of Plumbing

    Plumbing Pipe Types and Sizes

There are several different types of plumbing pipes that vary in function and sizes. The two main types of pipes include the water supply pipes and the drain-waste pipes. Water supply pipes function under pressure while the drain-waste pipes utilize gravity. There’s also sometimes natural gas pipes or central vacuum systems depending on the type of water supply system in the home or business.

Some of the main pipes include:

    • Main water supply pipe: Connects to a well, city supply, or water company supply
    • Waste drainage system: Connects to a sewer line or septic tank
    • Vent pipes: Prevent gases from the sewer from entering into your home

    Types of Pipe

The size of the pipe and the material it’s made from is typically determined by what its function is. For instance, most water is carried through white plastic or copper pipes from ½ to 1 inch in diameter. Steel pipes and sometimes flexible copper pipes may carry gas.

    Metal plumbing

Most homes nowadays don’t use metal pipes due to their heavy weight, chance of rusting, and discoloration of water. Galvanized pipes do sometimes show up in older homes or can sometimes be used as water pipes so long as they’re coated with zinc to help prevent corrosion or rusting. The benefit to galvanized piping is that it lasts for up to 100 years if installed properly and maintained. Metal pipes are typically used for water supply lines, outdoor pipes or underground.

    Copper plumbing pipes

Copper pipes last a long time and are durable, making them a popular choice. Copper is also known to tolerate extreme temperatures well, is resistant to corrosion, and safe to use with drinking water. Copper is however one of the most expensive options. It’s typically used for drinking water supply, hot water supply, refrigerant lines, and underground.

    Types of PVC pipes

PVC pipe is the most common type of pipe in homes today. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride. PVC is affordable and versatile. It’s also strong and won’t bend under pressure. PVC pipe offers a wide selection of sizes and fittings. It’s mainly used for water lines, both warm and cold. PVC doesn’t rust or corrode, so the only time it needs to be replaced or repaired is if it’s damaged. It’s also one of the easier types of pipes to work with because it doesn’t require any welding. PVC pipes cannot be used for hot water lines because the heat may cause the pipe to warp. Most of the time PVC is not used for drinking water since it can be damaged by hot temperatures and high pressure.

    • PVC is typically used for:
      • Drain lines (sinks, toilets, showers)
      • Main water supply lines

PVC comes in two sizes. Schedule 40 is the most popular and is typically white in color. It has thinner walls than Schedule 80, so it works well with low water pressure. Schedule 80 is slightly thicker and stronger than Schedule 40 and can withstand higher pressure. Schedule 80 is typically grey in color. Both have the same outer diameter; the difference is in the thickness of the walls. That means if necessary, a schedule 40 can fit together with a schedule 80. The problem is that because each pipe can withstand different amounts of pressure, putting them together may risk one of the pipes becoming warped.

  • When Do You Need an Emergency Plumber?

Not all plumbing issues are an emergency. You may be able handle simple problems on your own such as a clogged toilet or shower drain. You may need to contact an emergency plumbing service if you have a more serious issue such as a water leak. A burst pipe can cause water damage to your walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, and even cause mildew or mold if it’s not handled right away.

Some of the most common emergency plumbing issues include:

Flooding: A burst pipe, leaky pipe, clogged toilet, or malfunctioning water heater may cause flooding, which all require an immediate response. Having a professional evaluate the source of the leak and repair it can save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

Septic Tank or Sewer Backup: When a septic tank or sewer is backed up, it likely means your wastewater lines are blocked. That means the sewage water will backup into your yard or even your home, causing damage. Sewage can contain bacteria and other contaminants that spread disease. It can even cause death. If you are experiencing issues such as bubbles from your drain, multiple clogged drains, a wet yard, sewage smell or your toilets aren’t flushing normally, this could mean your wastewater line is blocked and needs immediate attention from a professional.

No more hot water: If your water will no longer heat up, this may mean there’s an issue with your hot water heater. It could be something simple like a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Or it could be a faulty thermostat or that the water heater just isn’t large enough. But sometimes it may mean there’s a gas leak or other major issue. This can be dangerous and it’s important to have a specialist evaluate and diagnose the issue.
